If God is for us

If God is for us, who can be against us

Sunday School lesson / Children’s Sermon: God’s power

If God is for us, who can be against us? Romans 8:31

A fun and creative lesson to teach about God’s power and God’s presence.

Object(s) needed: Thick rope – at least ten feet long. If there are other adults available, get one of the biggest and strongest men to help with this skit.

Basic idea: Have 3 or 4 young children on each side of a rope for a “tug of war.” Have a very big and strong individual join one side making it ridiculously easy for that team. Have him them join the other team. This man is so strong that what ever side he is on is bound to win hands down. POINT: God is so much more powerful than a mere strong man. If God is on our side (Or, if we are on his side!) we will definitely be on the strongest and best team. If God is for us, who can be against us!

Full Children’s Story: Good Morning Children. Today’s bible lesson is found in Romans 8:31. This passage says “If God is for us, who can be against us?” I want to have some fun this morning and show explain to you what this bible verse means. I need some volunteers this morning. I’ll have you 3 kids stand here and I’ll have you 3 children stand here. (Put the children on two short lines facing each other). Now, look what I have here. Yes! It’s a very think rope – just perfect for having a little tug-of-war contest. I’d like both teams to hold on to this rope. I’ll mark the middle of the rope with this ribbon and I’ll put this tape on the floor to mark the center line. Take up the slack, and when I say pull, pull with all your might and we’ll see which team is the strongest. Ready, set, go! (Let them pull for a few seconds until one sides seems to be winning. Then interrupt them) OK, wait a minute. I think this side needs a little help. I’ll get someone else up here to join your team. (Pick out the biggest and strongest individual in the congregation to help) Mr.T. (or whatever the name is) could you please come up here and help out this side since they need a little help. OK. Let’s start again. (Side with Mr. T. easily pulls the other side over.) Whoa! This side one so easily. How about if you join the other side Mr. T. and we’ll try again. (Option: Get the congregation to cheer a bit for fun.) Now this side wins so easily.
You can stop now. Let’s have a big cheer for all these individuals who helped me here.
Please listen carefully. It’s easy to see that Mr. T. is so big and strong that what ever side he is on wins.
Perhaps this can help us understand this bible passage in Romans 8. Paul said that “If God is for us, who can be against us!” In other words, if God is on our side (or if we are on God’s side) then no one can possibly make us loose at life. Mr. T. is pretty strong, but God is far more powerful than him. If God is on our side, standing up for us, we can be sure that we will win at life. We may have disappointments and hard times but we will know God’s love is always with us and that he will rescue us in the end.

Children's Prayer: God. Thank you for your great love and thank you for what Jesus did to bring us to you.
Help us always to know that as we stay close to you we are not alone. Help us to always know that we are in your great love and safe in your great power. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen!
